E-Seminar, Telemedicine and Screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity: An Innovative Multi-Unit Approach to Consistent Expert Care
Neonatal Intensive Care Units nationwide must provide comprehensive screening capabilities for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), while battling the challenges of qualified ophthalmologist availability. This course will discuss the benefits of using telemedicine for ROP screening as compared to traditional ROP screening with binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy. The course will then cover building a hybrid infrastructure of an interdisciplinary telemedicine program to screen infants for ROP utilizing both remote screening with digital wide-angle ocular fundus photography combined with traditional, ophthalmologist-performed binocular indirect exams for ROP. Lastly, the course will examine successful training practices for the initial and ongoing competency validation of Registered Nurses as screening specialists.
At the end of this eSeminar, participants will be able to:
- Compare the benefits of telemedicine ROP Screening with traditional ROP screening.
Discuss the key elements of building a successful hybrid, interdisciplinary telemedicine screening program.
Identify training practices for the initial and ongoing competency validation of Registered Nurses as screening specialists.
